    Description

    "Tsujigahana" - Woman's Haori
This is a rare combination of shibori and sumie-style painting called tsujigahana. It's a two step dye process where the fabric is first tied and dyed (shibori) and then areas are embellished or stenciled and painted with a fine brush.
The silk is soft and light, and the coloring suggests this was made for summer wear. A lovely cream background with floating blossoms between wavy bands of orange shibori dots. Look closely to find the delicate black ink accents and the hand drawn florals.
Haori do not cross over or tie with a sash, like a kimono does - they are meant to be worn open to reveal a bit of what is worn beneath.
Shibori is "Japanese tie-dye", where an artisan stitches along a stenciled image on the fabric, pulling the threads tightly to create a resist. The fabric is then dyed and when the threads are released, the pattern is revealed. There are dozens of shibori techniques, with the most common these days called kaneko (referring to the spots on a fawn), where an often elaborate pattern is created by hundreds of tiny dots. Kyoto is famous for this kaneko style.
